Studying at Golestan University
On October 3, 1957, the foundations of higher education in Golestan Province were laid with the opening of the Forest and Rangeland Higher Education Institute in Gorgan, inaugurated by the then Minister of Agriculture. In 1976, the institute was upgraded to the School of Natural Resources. In 1979, with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Science, the school was incorporated into the Ministry of Science and became part of Mazandaran University as the Faculty of Natural Resources. Following the Cultural Revolution and the reopening of universities and higher education institutions in 1982, four academic departments were established within this faculty. At the time, the departments offered associate and non-continuous bachelor’s degree programs, and full undergraduate programs began in 1981. In 1988, the Faculty of Natural Resources in Gorgan was promoted to the Gorgan University Complex for Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences, becoming independent from Mazandaran University. In 1992, this academic complex—comprising the faculties of Basic Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Natural Resources—was officially upgraded to the Gorgan University of Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences. In 2008, as part of the national effort to expand higher education and in response to the region’s urgent need for skilled professionals across all academic fields, three faculties—Basic Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering—were separated from the Gorgan University of Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences to form the foundation of Golestan University. Today, Golestan University is recognized as one of the leading centers of higher education in northern Iran, having earned numerous achievements in both academic and cultural fields, thanks to its rich legacy and strong institutional foundations.
