Studying at Maragheh University
Maragheh University is located in the largest city after the capital of East Azerbaijan province, namely the city of Maragheh. The institution began its activities in 1987 with the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture. Today, the university comprises four faculties and one research center dedicated to astronomy and astrophysics. Currently, more than 4,000 students are enrolled, and around 120 professors and academic staff are actively working there. To date, the university has published 2,090 scientific articles in domestic journals and 1,800 ISI-indexed articles in both national and international conferences and publications.
Ranking
According to the D8-2022 ranking, Maragheh University secured the 215th position among the D8 countries and ranked 50th among universities in Iran. Additionally, based on the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/university-maragheh), the university’s engineering sciences were ranked between 801 and 1000.

Introduction to the Research Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Maragheh University
One of the largest and most well-equipped observatories in the country is the Maragheh Observatory, which remains a key hub for astronomy and astrophysics enthusiasts. The proposal to establish a dedicated research center for astronomy and astrophysics was first presented to the Research Deputy of the Ministry of Science in mid-2001. In May 2002, the Higher Education Expansion Council approved the establishment of this center under the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology.
The center received its official approval in 2002 and began its formal activities in 2003. Since then, a great deal of research has been conducted, and the center’s researchers have earned numerous honors and achievements. Currently, the research center admits students for graduate studies at both the master’s and doctoral levels.
