Studying at Allameh Tabatabaei University

Introduction
After the Islamic Revolution, due to the high importance of humanities and the need to establish a specialized university in the field of humanities and social sciences in Iran, a number of independent higher education centers—including universities, colleges, research institutes, advanced schools, training centers, and organizations—were merged. These institutions had been gradually established since 1958 (1337 in the Iranian calendar). Two academic complexes were formed: one named the Literature and Humanities Complex, and the other the Administrative and Business Sciences Complex. Each of these complexes operated independently for over five years.

On July 7, 1984 (16th of Tir, 1363 in the Iranian calendar), based on the approval of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, these two complexes were merged to form Allameh Tabataba’i University.

Today, Allameh Tabataba’i University is the only specialized university in the country focused solely on humanities and social sciences. It consists of:

  • 10 faculties
  • 1 higher education institute
  • 1 graduate campus
  • 1 innovation and entrepreneurship center
  • 9 research institutes and research centers

The university offers programs in 226 academic fields at the undergraduate (Bachelor’s), Master’s, and Ph.D. levels.
Currently, the university has 530 full-time faculty members.
Since its establishment, the university has graduated around 77,000 students.
In the academic year 1395–1396, the university had approximately 18,000 students enrolled.
